PhilaPort sees historical increase in TEU volumes, motions to expand warehousing and logistics capabilities

Total annual container volume (Import & Export)

  • The Port of Philadelphia (PhilaPort) has experienced tremendous growth over the past ten years, with total annual import and export volume rising 272% from 205K TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2012, to its last peak in 2022 of 763K TEUs annually. Following this historic growth, the port witnessed its largest decrease in annual volume down by 20K TEUs equating to a 2.6% annual decrease.

  • As a result, work has been underway to expand the ports warehouse and logistics capabilities. Since March 2021, over 300K SF of new warehouse space has already been developed to increase the dry storage capacity at Tioga Marine Terminal and along Pattisson Avenue.

  • In April 2023, the port received a zoning permit to develop a new 277K SF cold storage warehouse and distribution facility in Southwest Philadelphia, to support the increases in volume of refrigerated and frozen goods at the port
