Long Island job postings for major office-using industries show surprising change since 2022

Long Island job posting trends, February 2022 vs February 2025

  • Comparing the amount of job postings during February 2022 versus February 2025 by industry, tech job postings have gone down by 24.5% and banking, finance, insurance & real estate postings have decreased by 11.0%. Meanwhile, legal services job postings increased by 67.6% over the same period, followed by engineering, architecture, construction & building materials at 57.8% and consulting, researching, accounting & recruiting at 55.0%.

  • Seeing as tech and banking, finance, insurance & real estate are traditionally some of the biggest industries in most markets, it’s surprising their amount of job postings has decreased given the recent surge in office activity nationwide. A possible explanation could be that companies with locations in both Long Island and nearby Manhattan are choosing to offer more positions in the latter of the two, where leasing activity reached post-pandemic highs in 2024. Another reason for the decrease could be uncertainty about the current global economic situation given the tariffs and trade restrictions imposed by the new administration. This may be causing companies to be more cautious about their economic outlooks and therefore are offering fewer new jobs.
